"Os"m knig o pervykh izobretatelyakh ..." [Eight books upon the first inventors...] is one of the first Russian reference books for home reading containing practically all the necessary information in various fields of science. The book was translated from Latin and published in 1720 following Peter the Great"s order who had found it useful for Russian readers. The book was translated into Russian by Feofilakt Lopatinsky, a religious figure of the early 18th century. The book"s second edition published by N.Novikov in 1872 consisted of 2 parts. Part 1 included books 1 to 4. Original whole leather bindings, spine gilt. Library pressmark on title. N.Novikov"s monogram on verso of title, engraved miniatures and vignettes. 21.5х12.5 cm., good condition: printing defect - pp.145-160 are paginated 245-260 being bound correctly between pp. 144-161; slight staining. The edition is of historical and cultural value. Rare.
