He and G. А. Sarychev led the Russian research expedition of 1785-94 to the North-Eastern Siberian coast. Billings crossed the Chukot Peninsula on deer and described its northern coast from the Bering Strait to Koluchinskaya Bay. The Parisian edition included 14 engraved plates and a map.
