In order to prevent England from occupying the Black Sea gulfs, Nicholas I sent landing troops and the Black Sea Squadron to come to the aid of Turkey. Turkish soldiers who participated in joint military action were awarded with the medal & sash of Order of St. Alexander Nevsky.
